In 1817, while in charge of the western portion of the Eighth Military Department, Trimble had gathered information on the Indian tribes of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. '' He added that the Cherokees "do not claim part of the country. . " 32 On the Arkansas River, where the majority of the Western Cherokees resided, population pressures worked to engender a southerly migration which would soon carry more Cherokees into Spanish territory.

Officials called it. Rapidly acquiring material possessions through trade and influence, many men and women adapted the outward trappings of Western material culture. After 1794 Indian agents pressed many Cherokees into adopting more intensive farming as a primary means of subsistence. This led to a dispersal of people out from the villages and onto individual farmsteads. In turn, the young had fewer contacts with the elderly, the keepers and teachers of tradition, and there was a concomitant decline in communal and ceremonial life.

A new junta, established by the emperor in January 1823, promulgated an Imperial Colonization Law, a statute applying primarily to such foreign entrepreneurs as Stephen F. 12 The Cherokees, arriving in the city in late January or early February, might have come under the new law, but they never managed an audience with the emperor. Soon Iturbide himself fell victim to a counterrevolution, and on March 19, 1823, he abdicated. 13 Undaunted, Fields immediately petitioned the new congress for assistance, but he received no encouragement.
