His first large-scale treatment of a scene from Greek mythology, the painting depicts the Colchian sorceress Medea clutching her children, with her dagger drawn, about to slay them in vengeance for her abandonment by Jason, as narrated in Euripides’ play Medea. The three nude figures form an animated pyramid, while light floods into the cave form the left, only penetrating the hidden shadows. Medea’s face itself is half hidden in gloom, encapsulating the mental strain and torment she in undergoing.

During his final years, Delacroix suffered from an increasingly fragile constitution. In addition to his home in Paris, he also lived at a small cottage in Champrosay, where he found respite in the countryside. From 1834 until his death, he was faithfully cared for by his housekeeper, Jeanne-Marie le Guillou, who zealously guarded his privacy, and whose devotion prolonged his life and his ability to continue working in his later years. The great artist passed away in Paris on 13 August 1863, aged sixty-five, and was buried in the city’s Père Lachaise Cemetery.

During the mid-1880’s Delacroix received many commissions from private collectors for small Orientalist pictures of Arabs mounting, tending or riding their horses. This 1855 image is now housed in St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum and depicts a scene of touching harmony between human and horse. As the Arab lifts the bright red saddle on to his steed, they share a moment regarding each other, a look of mutual respect seemingly caught in the noble way each figure is heroically represented by the artist.
