Nevertheless, in some children, having been punished, even relatively mildly, for engaging in bullying may inhibit their expression of aggressive behavior. This approach promises to involve the administration of justice. There is often a widespread fear in the community that offenders – for this is how those who bully are commonly seen – will ‘get away with it’ unless the school authorities ‘come down hard upon them’. The disciplinary approach is commonly viewed as straightforward: the rules of behavior established by the school are invoked, cases are investigated, and the transgressors duly punished.
