Layla, born in 1950, was not from any particularly religious family. However, as she stressed, she has always had a belief in God from which she has never departed. In her mid-twenties she traveled with the “pink buses” for six months to India. During the same period of time, she met a Muslim man at her work that caught her attention. When Layla came back from the trip they got to know each other better and in 1976 they married. He was not a Muslim, in any spiritual way, as she expressed it, but he did not eat pork or drink alcohol.
Hannah was born in the mid-1950s in Mississippi but grew up in the Midwest. She was raised in a Christian tradition and frequently went to church on Sundays. All her relatives are Christians and her mother’s father was a minister. After high school she came into contact with some Muslim people and felt drawn to what she learned about Islam and the way they were living the religion. Of the several elements of Islam, Hannah was particularly attracted to the emphasis on the family and the different roles of men and women.
