It was these ladino slaves who accompanied their masters on voyages of discovery and conquest to the Atlantic islands and the New World and who were the first black inhabitants of America. But despite their early migration and the important role they played in establishing the legal, social, and cultural norms for the Africans who followed them, the Europeanized African slaves were not used to establish the new economic role for European slave labor. It was the Africans brought directly to the previously unpopulated Atlantic islands beginning in the first half of the 15th century who were to define the new plantation model of Afro-American slave labor.

This is most clearly reflected in the activities of the Crown, which often had emergency recourse in its fortifications, shipyards, and fleets to hundreds of unskilled and skilled workers, almost all of whom they rented from private owners. Another characteristic of the Peruvian labor scene was the existence in every region and every craft of free black and mulatto workers, employed alongside slaves. Again in a pattern common to the rest of Spanish and Portuguese America, free blacks and mulattoes appeared from the very beginning of the conquest and colonization period, some of them even coming from Spain itself.

Mexican slaves also appear to have worked more heavily in the textile obrajes than did their Peruvian counterparts, especially as the government struggled to decide whether to allow or prohibit Indian labor in these factories. But even here their relative importance declined over time as salaried Indians and mestizos took on more 35 African Slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean and more of the laboring role. Even in royal construction, long a preserve of slave labor elsewhere in Spanish America, the government would rely more on convict, corvee, and free Indian wage-labor.
