More generally, if perceptible things and characteristics are always in flux, always becoming, how can anything be something definite or determinate? How can one know or say what anything is? Aristotle tells us that it was reflection on these fundamental questions that led Plato to "separate" the forms from perceptible things and characteristics, as Socrates did not (Metaphysics, 987a29-bl, 1086b2-5). The allegories of the Sun and Line in the Republic (507a-511e), which divide reality into the intelligible part and the visible or perceptible part, seem to embody this separation.

Statues are examples: their matter is the stone or metal from which they are made; their form is their shape. Human beings are also examples: their matter is (roughly speaking) their body; their soul is their form. Thus a human soul is not something separable from a human body, but is more like the structural organization responsible for the body's being alive and functioning appropriately. 13).
