In some situations, counselling psychologists compete with counsellors for work, particularly in Primary Care trusts and groups. SELECTING A TRAINING ROUTE It was pointed out earlier, in respect of the different theoretical orientations, that training consists of a mixture of: (a) self-exploration in the form of personal therapy, personal development groups, etc. (b) supervised work with clients (c) the acquisition of speci®c skills (d) understanding theory and perhaps also making sense of and carrying out research.

An accredited course (formerly called a recognised course) satis®es the training component of accreditation. However, while some clinical practice will be accumulated during the course, it is unlikely that suf®cient hours will have been accumulated to satisfy the practice component. It is probable, therefore, that some or even the bulk of the necessary experience is likely to be obtained after the completion of the course. A variant of this route involves undertaking 450 hours of counselling training comprising skills development (200 hours) and theory (250 hours) plus at least 450 hours of practice over a minimum period of three years.
